Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he grew up in Durban and spent 8 years in Maun, Botswana where his work in the tourism industry started. After finishing high school he worked with his father running a Rest Camp in the northern region of the Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana, and learnt the value of educating visitors on Southern Africa to heighten the appreciation they have for Africa. In 2003 he moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he continued his studies. He met the owner of DSA in August 2007 and moved down to Tucson shortly after.
