What To See and Do

This is one of four pans which lie in the heart of the Namib Desert and is home to the world's tallest sand dunes, some of which tower over 984 feet high! It's located in the Namib Naukluft Park, the largest conservation area in Africa, and fourth largest in the world. The best time to view Sossusvlei is at sunrise; the colors are strong and constantly changing, allowing for wonderful photographic opportunities.

Due to the opening time of the national park gates, the only way you're able to be at the dunes for sunrise is to either camp at Sesriem or stay in the accommodation at Sossusvlei Wilderness Camp, Kulala Lodge, Little Kulala or Kulala Wilderness Camp. There are many other lodges in the Sesriem / Sossusvlei area, but if you are accommodated at one of these you will only reach the dunes after sunrise.

Ballooning over the Great Sand Sea gives an excellent perspective of the expanse of dunes and the total silence - between flame-blasts - lends an eerie touch to this exhilarating experience.
