Okavango & Moremi Safaris
Okovango & Moremi Safaris What To See and Do
The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world, instead of flowing out towards the sea, the annual floods from Angola and surrounding areas flow inland, spreading over 7,000 miles of Kalahari sand, in a maze of lagoons and channels. The countless islands that emerge from its waterways give rise to several diverse ecosystems which are home to vast numbers of game, fish and a myriad birds.
Gliding silently through the Delta waters in a mokoro (a dugout canoe), you can watch the wildlife and enjoy the tranquility of your surroundings. Often it's the smaller things that amaze you, like the tropical fish that dive in and out of the clear waters or the iridescent Malachite Kingfishers that dive for them. It takes keen eyes to spot the Terrapins basking on floating logs, or the Fish Eagle just perching, waiting to catch its dinner. Also watch the daily activities of the larger game as they come down to the waters edge to drink and hunt.
Game also abounds year-round in the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, a 1,400 square mile wildlife sanctuary. Hippos and Crocodiles bathe and laze in clear waters, while huge herds of Impala and Tsessebe roam the savannah. In the dry season, large herds of Buffalo, Wildebeest and Zebra migrate back into the area from the Kalahari Desert. The rare Sitatunga and Lechwe Antelope live in the papyrus banks of the waterways and Lion, Cheetah and Leopard hunt in the open grassland. For an all-round vacation, including land and water-based game experiences, there is nowhere in Africa that can offer more than the Okavango Delta and Moremi.
